Peoples Potential Unlimited New Entries

Morgan Interview with Andrew Who heads the Most Excellent Peoples Potential Unlimited Which Specialise in reissuing label modern soul and funk from the 1980s. We caught up with Andrew to see what’s going on with his label and what he has lined up for us in the near future.

Q1. The idea for PPU, when did the penny drop that you were going to reissue or plan to issue for the first time modern soul music from yesteryear?

In 2007 I was working with Wilbert Harris of TMS (PPU-001). I had contacted him with questions about his 45″, looking for more copies to sell
on my website earcave He had nothing, not even a copy for himself, so Wilbert and I decided to try and reissue it. I did not have any idea how to license music, or how to even make a record.. soon you realize it’s not that difficult. All you need is a great music.

Q2. You seem to have access to a rich back catalogue and roster of artists, how did you make the in-roads to be in this unique position?

Lots of phone calls… eventually things start to crossover.. for example the group on the B side of PPU-001, CAPRICE featured vocalist Larnette, who was Apollonia’s sister. She sang for several groups in the Midwest, and can be heard on 2 different PPU releases.. different bands, just a year later she was in the Midnight Express Show Band and sings back-up on Danger Zone. It’s great to be able to talk to the band and make those connections. You can see her here..

Glass Pyramid Unrelease Boogie Archives

Q3. What are your favourite releases for PPU personally and why?

I’ve really enjoyed every project on PPU. My favorites are the artists who come with the entire package and have saved every relic. VIDEO FOOTAGE, DEMO TAPES, PHOTOS, etc. Glass Pyramid Band is a favorite, because their music was unreleased, and it really was a dream come true for Garcia and the GP Family to get that EP out finally after 30 years. We are working on a GLASS PYRAMID DVD now of some LIVE footage of the group. On that same BETAMAX tape was 30 minutes of an after-hours party.. You can see a preview here…

Q4. What does the future hold for PPU, more singles, LP’s?

I’ll tell you what’s in store for Winter 2010. HILL/ROSHELL ANDERSON split 12″ / TRI-FIRE 45″ / PPU VIDEO PARTY 2 “Glass Pyramid” DVD / UKU KUUT 45″ / DANAN POTTS WESTWOOD & CASH 12″ / CALIFORNIA FLIGHT PROJECT “Hook With You” 12″ / George SMALLWOOD Lady Disco DEMO 45″ .. that’s what’s on my desk now.

PPU Family Album compilation

Q5. Aside from the PPU label, do you work on any other music related projects?

Since PPU was hobby which is has turned into 12 hour work days, this is all I have time for at the moment.

Q6. The label is growing slowly but surely, do you think PPU will continue to grow or do you think the market size for what you service is exactly what you cater for at moment?

The catalog will grow. As far as the amount of vinyl we move, I plan to keep it the same.
Fans of PPU appreciate the fact that everything is collectible. I’m trying to get some seriously obscure music back in print, and as long as there are people interested in buying vinyl we will be making them happy.

Q7. Have you copped anybody sampling the music you have reissued?

Of course! Djs keep me up to date if they hear anything too. As long as it doesn’t pop up on 93.9 FM JAMS, i’m fine with people borrowing.

Q8. With a resurgence in 1980′s music, do you think that this genre will fall back into obscurity or do you think there will always be a niche for modern soul and funk music?

Hopefully with our reissues we can keep people’s ears to the 80s, and these recordings will not be obscure anymore. I agree that just like fashion, music follows trends, and right now it’s 80s.. but to me this is some of the best music ever made, and Fans of FUNK MUSIC are fans for life.
